Poet Benoy Majumdar dies
Kolkata, Dec 11 (UNI) Benoy Majumdar, one of the pioneer poets in the post-war Bengali literature, died at his Thakurnagar residence in North Twentyfour Parganas district this morning following a prolonged illness. He was 75.
A recipient of the prestigious Academy and Rabindra awards, Benoy Majumdar was a graduate in engineering. But he opted for an uncertain life that gave him fame in the literary circle without stability.
With his brilliant imagination and ingenuity with form and language, he was reckoned as one of the formidable Bengali poets through a span of more than 30 years from the sixties.
For long he had been suffering from neurological and other ailments.
'Fire Eso Chaka (come back, wheel)', a landmark collection of his poems, 'Gayatrike (To Gayatri)' and 'Nakshatrer Aloye (In the star light)' were among his best known works.
