Mah: Oppn adjournment motion on Wani firing

Nagpur, Dec 11: An opposition-sponsored adjournment motion on the death of a farmer in police firing in Wani, in Yavatmal district of Vidarbha region of the state, was today accepted by Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Giving his ruling, Mr Kupekar said he was using his powers to set aside the rules and precedents, to grant permission to the motion considering the urgency and seriousness of the issue. The motion would be discussed later in the day, he said.

As many as 25 members, including the leader of Opposition Ramdas Kadam, BJP group leader Gopinath Munde, senior member Ganpatrao Deshmukh and the MLA from Wani, Vishwas Nandekar, had given separate notices for an adjournment motion on the incident.

Earlier, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Harshavardhan Patil said the government was willing to discuss the issue any time in the House.

A farmer, Dinesh Tukaram Gugal, died due to a bullet injury in his stomach, sustained in the police firing after farmers agitated over the delay in the procurement process went berserk and resorted to violence at a cotton purchase centre in Wani on Friday.

Meanwhile, the curfew imposed in Wani on Saturday afternoon after violent protests in the town over Gugal's death was relaxed this morning, Yavatmal district Superintendent of Police (SP) Abdur Rehman told UNI. The curfew had been relaxed till 1700 hrs today, and further decision would be taken after reviewing the situation this evening, he said.
