New Delhi, Dec 11: GMR Infrastructure Ltd today said Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) has awarded Larsen&Toubro (L&T) a contract worth Rs 5,400 crore for design and construction of terminal, runway and associated works of the airport.

The deal will give shape to the master plan unveiled by GMR and DIAL, a public-private-partnership initiative mandated to operate, manage and develop the Delhi Airport, the infrastructure major said in a statement.

The 'Design Build' nature of the contract will allow design and construction to be undertaken concurrently by L&T. This will help GMR-DIAL to shorten the time taken for construction of the new runway and terminal significantly, it said.

The master plan envisages the design and construction of a new terminal and a runway for the modernisation and upgradation of Delhi Airport.

The passenger terminal building (Terminal 3) would cater to both domestic and international passengers. It will feature more than 130 check-in counters, 50 emigration and 46 immigration counters to reduce waiting time for the passengers.

Spread over 4.4 million square feet, T3 would feature 74 aerobridges and 30 remote parking stands for aircrafts.

The contract also includes installation of elevators and escalators, baggage handling systems, IT, security, electrical and mechanical systems.

T3 would be ready well in time for the Commonwealth Games 2010.

With this terminal, the total capacity of IGI will go up to 37 million passengers per annum by 2010.

Prior to that, L&T would also construct a new runway measuring 4430m that will be ready by 2008. The Code F runway will be able to handle A380 aircrafts. This runway would be amongst the longest in Asia and will be equipped with CAT IIIB ILS.

The deal also involves the construction of connecting taxiways, satellite fire fighting facilities, amongst others.

In addition the project involves the development of Airside works involving aprons, remainder taxiways, cargo terminals, aircraft maintenance facilities, utility services and other primary infrastructure support facilities.

Land side works involve six-lane road connecting the terminal and national highway NH-8, a new multi-storey car park to accommodate 4,300 cars, forecourt for terminal T3, etc.
