Gurjars to rally in Delhi on December 17
Jaipur, Dec 11 (UNI) At least five lakh Gurjars from across the country will stage a rally in the national capital on December 17 in favour of the Scheduled Tribe status for the community.
Speaking at a press conference here today, Rajasthan Dev Seva Dal president Sayyar Dhabai said the government had been constantly ignoring their demands and their status remained the same as that during the time of Independence.
Mr Dhabai said at least 50,000 Gurjars from Rajasthan alone will attend the 'Gurjar Mahakumbh' on the banks of Yamuna near Akshardham in Patparganj area.
The meeting will be addressed by MP Avatar Singh Bharana. ''Many other Gurjar leaders, cutting across party lines from both the BJP and the Congress, are expected to participate in the meet,'' he said.
Besides the ST status, the meet will also focus on atrocities on the Gurjars residing in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Mr Dhabai said the Gurjars in border states have to bear the brunt of both terrorists and police atrocities.
Gurjars in Rajasthan constitute eight to nine per cent of the total population. They have already been included in the Other Backward Category.
