Garhshankar, Hoshiarpur, Dec 11 (UNI) Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh today denied his government's role in former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu's trial in which the latter has been convicted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

''On the contrary, the trial in the 18-year-old murder case was ordered during the Badal-led Akali Dal Government and later the appeal against the trial court's acquittal was also filed during Mr Badal's subsequent government in 1998 before the high court'', Capt Singh told reporters.

It is to be noted here, that the then Beant Singh-led Congress government (1992-1997) had moved an application before the court for withdrawal of the case but the same was rejected.

However, Mr Singh condemned Mr Sidhu's arrogant behaviour highlighted in the electronic media after the conviction and said that Sidhu was held guilty of killing an old man and his conduct was highly deplorable.
