Election Commissioner Navin Chawla in Varanasi

Varanasi, Dec 11 (UNI) Election Commissioner Navin Chawla arrived here this evening and shortly went into a huddle with administrative officials of Varanasi and Vindhyachal zones to take stock of preparations for assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh likely early next year.

Official sources said here that Mr Chawla, arrived here this evening and straight away went to the Circuit House to attend a meeting with seven district magistrates and two divisional commissioners of Varanasi and Vindhyachal division. Transparency and efficacy in the revision of electoral rolls ahead of the crucial polls was the prime focus at the meeting which was also attended by Chief Electoral Officer of UP Anuj Kumar Bishnoi.

The political circles in the two zones have considered the meeting to be significant, especially after yesterday's statements by Union Minister of State for home affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal, where he had ruled out the possibility of central rule in the poll bound state but added on that the centre will impress upon the Election Commission to put a close watch on the state where the ruling Samajwadi Party could attempt influencing the entire poll process.
