Civic polls in south Gujarat conducted peacefully

Surat, Dec 10 (UNI) Amid stray violence, civic polls in 1,000 Gram Panchayats in Surat, Navsari, Valsad and Dangs district of south Gujarat were held today.

According to a preliminary estimate, the total polling is around 50 per cent, sources said.

In Vansada village in Navsari district, a clash between two groups over some poll-related dispute resulted in the death of one person and injured five others. The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital here.

Polls were conducted for 244 Gram Panchayats in Navsari district.

Polls were conducted in 571 Gram Panchayats here.

The counting of votes will take place tomorrow. The election process will be completed by December 14.

Meanwhile, out of total 10,371 Gram Panchayats in the state, 7,283 went to polls today. The polls are being held in phases and for today's polls, 43,269 seats were contested by 1,05,435 candidates, according to sources.
