Asom Govt demands two storied rail-cum-road bridge on Brahmaputra

Guwahati, Dec 11(UNI): The Asom government has moved the PMO and the Railway Ministry for construction of a new two-storied rail-cum-road bridge on the river Brahmaputra adjacent to the existing bridge at Saraighat as part of the East West Corridor.

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator Girindra Kumar Baruah during the Question Hour drew the attention of the House about the need for a double storied rail-cum-road bridge as part the East West Corridor that was being constructed by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

Members of other political parties too supported the view of the AGP legislator while airing their concern over the slow pace of work on the project.

In reply, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi informed the House that the state government had already moved the PMO and the Railway Ministry demanding a two-storied bridge over the river Brahmaputra at Saraighat as part the East West project.

It may be mentioned that the existing rail-road bridge over the river Brahmaputra at Saraighat, which is the most vital surface link between the Northeast and the rest of the country, was commissioned way back in 1962.
