Curfew continues for second day in Wani
Nagpur, Dec 10 (UNI) Indefinite curfew, which was imposed in Wani in Yavatmal district of Vidarbha region, continued for the second day today.
The curfew was imposed after some stone pelting incidents during protests over the death of a farmer in police firing on Friday at the cotton procurement centre in the district.
The curfew has been continued as a precautionary measure even though there has been no fresh trouble in the town, Yavatmal District Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Abdur Rehman told UNI.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, who holds the Home portfolio, today visited Mendholi village in Yavatmal district to meet the family of the farmer who was killed in the police firing. Guardian Minister for the district Manohar Naik gave a compensation cheque of Rs four lakh to the kin of the deceased in Mr Patil's presence.
The compensation amount includes Rs two lakh ex-gratia payment from the State government, Rs one lakh from the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), Wani, which operates the procurement centre, and Rs one lakh from Vasantrao Naik Memorial Trust.
Later, Mr Patil visited the procurement centre in Wani and held a meeting with senior officials to assess the situation. He was accompanied by Minister for Education Vasant Purke, Minister of State for Rural Development Ranjit Kamble and Maharashtra State Cotton Growers' Marketing Cooperative Federation Managing Director N Arumugam.
