Brazil's Lula, first lady to adopt girl - report

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Dec 9 (Reuters) Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and the first lady have decided to adopt a girl, most likely in 2007, first lady Marisa Leticia told a local weekly magazine published this week.

Marisa Leticia said in IstoE Gente that she wanted to begin the adoption process this year but the president asked that they wait until after the election.

Brazil's first working-class president won a second four-year term on October. 31.

''I'm looking for a little girl to adopt,'' she said at an event last weekend for needy children in Brasilia. ''If you know of one, let me know.'' Lula, 61, a former metals worker and union leader, and his wife, 56, have three sons from their marriage. Lula also has a daughter from a previous marriage and the first lady has a son from an earlier marriage, whom Lula adopted.

A spokeswoman from Lula's communications office said she could neither confirm nor deny the report.
