SC directs TN govt to implement suggestions
New Delhi, Dec 8 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed the Tamil Nadu government to implement all the suggestions made by the petitioners as well as by the Animals Welfare Board of India for improving hygiene levels at the slaughter houses in the state.
The suggestions include engaging Veterinary doctors, certification of animals fit for human consumption before slaughtering these animals, not to slaughter any animal in front of other animals and immediate removal of all encroachments made by the slaughter house owners on public land.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Y K. Sabharwal and Justices C K Thakker and R V Raveendran issued the directions to the government to file its compliance report before the next date of hearing.
The state of Tamil Nadu in its additional affidavit has informed the apex court that it has perused carefully the inspection report prepared by the Animal Welfare Board of India in respect of 33 slaughter houses in the state and has also assured the court that it will take all possible steps for implementing the suggestions and recommendations made by the Board expeditiously.
The state government has also assured the court to take effective and speedy steps to modernise the slaughter houses with all modern facilities to improve the substandard condition prevailing in the slaughter houses in the state.
Today's directions were issued by the apex court during the hearing of a PIL filed by the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
