Meghalaya govt assures House tabled firing incident in next session

Shillong, Dec 8 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister JD Rymbai taday told the state assembly that his government would table the report of Commission of Inquiry on police firing on September 30, 2005, in the next session.

His assurance to this effect came after the Opposition members demanded to place the Justice (retd) DN Baruah Inquiry Commission report in this session.

Justice Baruah, who was inquiring into the Williamnagar incident, had submitted his report to the government.

While Commission of Justice DN Chaudhuri probing the Tura firing incident was yet to submit its report due to some ''legal hurdles'', the government hoped that it would be completed by January next.

Nine people, including women, were killed while scores injured on September 30 police firing at Tura and Williamnagar over the issue of revamping and restructuring the Meghalaya Board of School Education.

At Tura, four people were killed and many injured in police firing. In Williamnagar, the district headquarters, East Garo Hills, another five were killed in police firing and several others injured.

Since both the incidents were inter-related, Mr Rymbai said ''it will be fit that both the reports are being placed before the House for debate,'' Adding that if the members are not satisfied with the findings of the Commissions, the government will refer to the select committee of the house.
