Lahiri tied 6th, men's team 4th in team golf after opening round

Doha, Dec 8 (UNI) Anirban Lahiri's opening round of three-under 69 saw the Indian finish tied sixth, while India finished day one of the men's team event at the fourth place in the golf competition of the 15th Asian Games here today.

In the team event, Lahiri (69) Gaganjeet Bhullar (70) and Chiragh Kumar (71) totalled 210 as India finished fourth with an opening round total of 210.

South Korea share the top slot with Chinese Taipei at 205, while Japan finished third just one stroke behind.

In the men's individual event, Anirban Lahiri came up with the best show among the Indians with an opening round of 69 for the tied sixth place.

Lahiri parred the first six holes before he stumbled on the par-four seventh and dropped a bogey. The Bangalore-based golfer, however, ensured that there was no more setback in his round and he atoned for the dropped shot with back to back birdies to finish his halfway journey on one-under.

On his way back, Lahiri again fired successive birdies on the 15th and 16th to put himself back on track and finish the day at three-under.

Gaganjeet Bhullar sank four birdies, as against a couple of bogeys, in his round of two-under 70 for a tied 11th finish.

Chirag Kumar's eventful round of one-under 71 included five birdies, two bogeys -- one in each nine -- and a double bogey on the par-four 11th hole as the Indian finished the day tied for 17th.

Joseph Chakola was the only Indian to go over-par today after he mixed two birdies and three bogeys in his opening round which saw him being tied for 27th.

Meghna Bal was the pick of the Indians in the women section and the youngster carded a two-under 71 to finish tied seventh after a round that included two bogeys and four birdies.

Vaishvi Sinha stuttered in her front nine and eventually went one-over 74 to be 15th, while fellow Indian Sharmila Nicollet had a horrendous four-over 77 to finish 18th.

In the team event, the Indian eves were lying sixth at 145, behind Japan (135), South Korea (137), Chinese Taipei (137), China (143) and Philippines (144).
