Turkish army chopper crashes in east, one killed

TUNCELI, Turkey, Dec 7 (Reuters) A Turkish army helicopter crashed in the eastern province of Bingol while landing, killing one army technician on board, security officials said today.

Five other soldiers, on their way to an operation against Kurdish guerrillas, were also injured. The cause of the crash was not known.

The Turkish army has been carrying out operations against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas despite a ceasefire by the group launched in October.

The PKK -- considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the European Union and the United States -- started a violent campaign for a Kurdish homeland in the southeast 1984. More than 30,000 people have died in the conflict.
