Chennai, Dec 7 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government would not tolerate desecration of statues of leaders installed in various parts of the State and warned of stern action against those indulging in such acts, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi told the State Assembly today.

Strongly condemning the desecration of the statue of Rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy at Srirangam early today, he said four people were arrested in this connection and said appropriate action would be taken against those involved.

Replying to a special call attention tabled by C Gnanasekaran (Congress), Mr Karunanidhi said there might be some divergent views on installing statues of great leaders.

There might also be some differences on the views expressed by the great leaders. But vandalising their statues would not be allowed at any cost.

''The Government will not tolerate such incidents'', he said and added that those who had committed such atrocities could not be pardoned.
