Sensex closes at another high of 13,972.03

Mumbai, Dec 7 (UNI) The Sensex touched a new peak of 13,972.03 with a modest gain of 23.03 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today on some fresh speculative buying support from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors.

Amidst a divergent trend in the constituents, Index heavyweights Reliance Industries and Infosys moved in opposite direction; the former gained while the latter slid.

Tata Motors, NTPC and Hindustan Lever (HLL) firmed up in late trading. Shipping firms and power equipment makers were in demand.

The Sensex rose 23.03 points (0.17 per cent) before it resumed high at 13,962.94.

The market firmed up in late-trading when the Sensex rose as many as 53.72 points to a high of 14,002.72 at intra-day. But it failed to sustain higher level and eased at the fag end of the trading session.

The Sensex fluctuated within a narrow range during mid-morning to afternoon trade. In early-trade, the benchmark index was gripped by high volatility.

The BSE CG index shot up by 106.74 to close at 9474.50 points, followed by MRTAL index by 57.18 points and touched at 9201.12,BANKEX index rose 56.80 points to close at 7253.80, OIL&GAS index went up by 48.45 points to touch at 6233.37 and PSU by shot up by 30.38 points to close at 6279.45.

Meanwhile, S&P CNX Nifty index of NSE opened flat at 4025. The Nifty index recorded high at 4027.70 and low at 4001.40 during the intra-day session. Finally it closed flat again at 4015.35.

The advance-decline ratio was even. For 1,286 shares that declined on BSE, 1,283 shares rose. As many as 68 scrips were unchanged and the market-breadth weakened during the course of the trading.

The BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 3,787 crore, brokers said.
