Sanctuary-ABN AMRO Wildlife Awards 2006 announced

Mumbai, Dec 7 (UNI) The ABN Amro Bank NV will present the 'Sanctuary -ABN AMRO Wildlife Awards 2006,' tomorrow here to the Earth Heroes, who are working for conservation of wildlife and environment across the country.

Speaking on the occasion ABN AMRO Executive Vice President and Country Executive (India) Mr Romesh Sobti said, ''ABN AMRO is proud to salute the Earth Heroes for the seventh consecutive year and it reflects the bank's support to the cause of wildlife protection and environment conservation. We will continue to seek, find and honour those who protect our wild nature. Helping the cause with our modest support is vital to ensure that we bequeath what we have inherited to the generations that follow.'' He said that the awards have been instituted to recognise and reward ''Earth Heroes'' men and women who are not afraid to stand up and be counted in the defence of our wildlife and environment.

One Lifetime Service Award is presented, along with five Wildlife Service Awards, a Green Teacher Award, three Young Naturalists Awards, and a 'Wind Under Wings' Award for an organisation that has supported one or more of its employees to be of service to nature.

These Earth Heroes were chosen from among scores of nominations received across the country by a panel comprising active wildlifers, educators and conservationists. After sifting through scores of nominations from different walks of life (NGOs, Government Officers, lawyers and educationists) the panel finally selected Mr Romulus Whitaker, the herpetology legend, to receive the prestigious Lifetime Service award.

The Wildlife Service Award winners are Mr Pradeep Vyas and the Sundarbans Patrolling Team, who have worked towards securing the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve and improving relations between the surrounding villages and the park authorities; Dr Dharmendra Khandal from Rajasthan, a dynamic tiger conservationist who has worked in Ranthambhore for the rehabilitation of the families of poachers of the Moghiya tribe; Mr Nitin Desai, a hands-on conservationist battling the illegal trade in wildlife; Mr Praveen Bhargava from Karnataka, who has worked meticulously in conserving the forests of Bhadra, Kudremukh and Nagarhole; and Mr Mohammad Firoz Ahmed, a wildlife biologist and environment educator from Assam.

Mr Nishikant Kale and Professor Laddha of Amravati jointly bagged the Green Teacher Award for their tremendous work in the field of environmental education and community conservation in Melghat Tiger Reserve and other conservation initiatives in Vidarbha.

The Young Naturalist Award winners are Mr Sameer Kehimkar, a snake rescuer and herpetologist from Maharashtra, Mr Bajrang Bishnoi, a wildlife conservationist by birth who belongs to the Bishnoi tribe of Rajasthan, and Mr Hakabhai Makawana from Gujarat, a coconut cutter who has been working to save vultures. The Wind under the Wings Award goes to NDTV, Delhi for enabling and supporting Ms Swati Thyagarajan to produce and present the extremely popular and vital series on wildlife born Wild.
