Ramdas Kadam surprised at Congress win in Chimur, Daryapur

Nagpur, Dec 7 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Ramdas Kadam today said it was surprising that the people continued to vote for the Congress inspite of serious problems in the state like farmers' suicides, power shortage, inflation and poverty.

Mr Kadam was reacting to the victory of the Congress nominees in the byelection to the Assembly from Chimur (Chandrapur district) and Daryapur (Amravati district) in Vidarbha region of the state.

''I have information that money was used to ensure the victory of the Congress candidates in Chimur and Daryapur, and I am verifying it,'' Mr Kadam told UNI here shortly after the results came in. If the information was true, then the victory of the Congress nominees was not moral, he said.

Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde alleged that the victory of the Congress in Daryapur and Chimur was due to 'money power'. However, the BJP had accepted the verdict of the people and would analyse the results to pinpoint the reasons for the defeat, Mr.

Munde told newsmen here.

''We had thought that the atmosphere in the two constituencies was against the Congress because of the large number of farmers' suicides in Vidarbha and other serious problems,'' he said.

Vijay Wadettiwar and Prakash Bharsakle of the Congress have been declared elected from Chimur and Daryapur respectively.
