Lucknow, Dec 7 (UNI) Police lathicharged the students of the Lucknow University (LU) here today after their protest, against the implementation of the Lyngdoh Committee report in the University elections on December 16, turned violent.

The students indulged in brickbatting and stone pelting on the main Harzaratganj market in the city while on way to the Raj Bhawan to lodge their protest. Police resorted to lathicharge to prevent them from proceeding to the Raj Bhawan, injuring some of the students in the process.

The one provision which is being repulsed by the students is ban on candidates against whom FIRs have been lodged or any disciplinary action has been taken.

The LU had earlier decided to give relaxation to the students.

But the intervention of Governor T V Rajeswar prompted the Universirty to amend the decision and impose ban on all those students who had any punitive action taken against them.

There are reports of student unrest in some other degree colleges of the city over the issue.

Meanwhile, shopkeepers and showrooms owners of the Hazratganj market kept their shutters down in apprehension of vandalism.

Besides the University, seven other degree colleges of the state capital are scheduled to go for student union elections and the Lyngdoh Committee recemmendations are likley to be imeplemented before this. The students in Kalicharan degree college and Vidyant Hindu degree college were also indulged in protests, police said.

The agitating students raised slogans against the report and alleged the proposed code of conduct for the student politics was against the democratic rights of the student community.
