NMCME stresses setting up of a minority cell

Port Blair, Dec 07 (UNI) The Chairman Standing Committee of National Committee for University Education (NMCME), Dr. Mani Jacob has urged the administration to set up a minority cell to look into the matters of minority community, especially their educational needs in remote island of Andaman and Nicobar.

Chairing the meeting of stake holders and public on issues relating to problems of minority run educational institutions, Dr.

Jacob said that once the cell comes into being, it will act as a link between the Minority community, educational institutions and government departments and solve petty issues as well as problems coming in the way of effective implementation of educational schemes and needs.

''One officer must be appointed to run the minority cell to look into the minority rights related issues,'' Dr Jacob said in a meeting held at Port Blair.

He said the cell can also approach the National Monitoring Committee for Minority Education for suggestions and guidelines from time to time.

Referring to the issue of opening of technical and higher education institutes, Dr. Jacob suggested opening a university for Andaman&Nicobar Islands.

''Once the University of this territory is functional all other institutes like engineering, nursing, fisheries etc will come under its umbrella, which will solve the problem of higher education of these islands,'' he said.

Responding to the grievances put forth by the representatives of Minority Educational Institutions during the meeting last line, the Chairman said government authorities cannot interfere in the selection procedures for appointing staff and principals in their respective institutes.

Representatives from various minority educational institutes, Mopla society, Madarsa heads, Karen community were present in the meeting.
