Mumbai, Dec 7 (UNI) Two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) filed a public interest litigation today before the Bombay High Court submitting that all animal rights as per the provisions of the state and national statutes were being violated at the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) run Deonar slaughter house.

The PIL filed by Jeevan Jagruti Trust and Akhil Bharat Go Seva Sangh prayed that an expert committee be appointed including two members from the petitioner NGOs to find out the areas where the statutory provisions are being violated or not being properly implemented and submit a report to the court.

The petitioners alleged that the animals brought for slaughtering to the Deonar slaughter house are not only brutally dragged on the ground but while transportation they are neither provided with proper space and fodder nor vaccination as is mandatory under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act.

In fact, according to the petitioners, despite MCGM's aim that slaughter should be the barest minimum and only to suffice the local needs, the meat is being exported since 1973.
