Militant killed, police station attacked in J

Srinagar, Dec 7 (UNI) Security forces killed a militant and arrested three others while ultras attacked a police station in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening, official sources said today.

They said security forces noticed some suspicious movement at Kanga Nullah near the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu region early this morning.

When asked to surrender, the militants opened fire on security forces, which was retaliated, and in the ensuing gun-battle an ultra was killed, the sources added. An AK assault rifle besides some ammunition and explosives were seized from the encounter site.

The identity of the slain ultra was yet to be established.

Militants hurled a hand grenade towards the Gool station in Udhampur district last evening. However, the grenades missed the intended target and exploded about 100 yards away from the target, without causing any damage.

Police personnel later fired at the militants, but they managed to escape from the scene.

Security forces apprehended over two ground workers of militants in Bandipora area of Baramulla district today.

Police seized one mobile phone and 50 rounds from the cowshed of Fayaz Ahmed Gojri at Danpora in Nishat area of the city today. He was later taken in custody for questioning.

Police averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Srinagar-Uri- Muzaffarabad highway today.

The sources said militants planted a powerful IED on the highway at Sangrama in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla to target the convoy of security forces and politicians.

However, a police party noticed the IED and immediately summoned the bomb disposal squad after closing the highway. The IED was later defused without causing any damage, the sources said.
