Meghalaya govt. concern with education department

Shillong, Dec 7 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister JD Rymbai has expressed concern over the non-performance of government-run schools.

Speaking at a function of upgrading the Umtlong Nongthliew Upper Primary School to Secondary School yesterday, Mr Rymbai urged the upon the teachers to cooperate with the government and to put all efforts in uplifting education in the state.

He said the teachers, parents and students should have collective responsibility in bringing out the effective change in the state, as his government is committed towards improving the quality of education.

Mr Rymbai added state education policy has to be reviewed and new ideas to be incorporated so as to achieve quality education.

Lamenting the poor performance of schools in the rural areas, state Deputy Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy said the cause has a descending trend in the education sector of the state.

He observed that many teachers are not willing to work in the rural areas, which he felt that the government may have to adopt the public school policy in which teachers cannot be transferred from their postings.

Referring to the need to improve higher education, Dr Roy stated that the government is trying to assure that all districts in the state will be provided with a government college.

He added the concept of public school should also be implemented in the rural areas to achieve the goals of quality education.

Dr Roy also urged upon the parents to send their children and not to make them work in the fields, stressing that as per the Labour Act, it is prohibited to employ children below age of 14 years.
