Maharashtra Assembly adjourned for an hour amid opposition din

Nagpur, Dec 7 (UNI) The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was today adjourned for an hour within ten minutes after the question hour commenced, amid din over the large number of suicides by farmers in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.

Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar adjourned the House after the entire opposition was on its feet, raising slogans against the Democratic Front (DF) Government for it's alleged failure to stop farmers from committing suicide, against load shedding in the state and demanding higher prices for cotton.

The opposition also raised slogans against the Speaker.

The sloganeering began as soon as the question hour commenced, but stopped for sometime when Mr Kupekar sought to know the reasons.

Leader of the Opposition, Mr Ramdas Kadam said that he had given a notice for an adjournment motion on the issue of farmer suicides in Vidarbha and another for suspending the question hour. A discussion on the issue was held yesterday in the absence of the opposition, he pointed out.

The Speaker said that he would give his ruling on the notice for an adjournment motion when it was time to do so, triggering a fresh round of sloganeering from the opposition.

He then announced the adjournment.
