Independent wins Roing bypoll in Arunachal
Itanagar, Dec 7 (UNI) Laeta Umbrey (Independent) today won the Roing assembly seat, defeating his nearest Congress rival Dature Muili by a slender margin of 365 votes.
Mr Umbrey wrested the seat from the Congress in the bypoll, which was necessitated following the resignation of Congress MLA Mukut Mithi after his appointment as Puducherry Lt Governor.
Mr Umbrey bagged 4572 votes; Congress' Dature Miuli got 4107 votes while opposition BJP candidate Raje Menjo could only manage 326 votes.
Seventy per cent of the 12,299 electorate had cast their votes in the December 4 bypoll.
Mr Umbrey, a former MP, had deserted the Congress after he was denied party ticket. He was expelled from the party for six years.
Meanwhile, state government spokesman and Water Resources Minister Tako Dabi congratulated Mr Umbrey, accepting his party's defeat in the election as the mandate of the people.
