Bhopal, Dec 7 (UNI) BJP candidate Devendra Varma was declared elected in the Assembly byelection in Pandhana constituency in Madhya Pradesh defeating his Congress rival Hiralal Silawat by a margin of 11,984 votes.

Mr Varma polled a total of 45,459 votes against 33,475 votes polled by Mr Silawat in the five-cornered contest. Sadhvi Uma Bharti-led Bhartiya Jan Shakti candidate Vasudeo Atoot came on the third spot bagging 12,723 votes.

Gondwana Gantantra Party nominee Navneet Gajbhiye got 1607 votes, while the lone Independent Umashankar Varma polled 2922 votes.

BJP retained the seat. The byelection was caused due to the murder of BJP MLA Kishorilal Varma. His son was given the BJP ticket.

Since Mr Shivraj Singh Chouhan took over as Chief Minister in November last year replacing Mr Babulal Gaur, the ruling BJP won all byelections in three Assembly constituencies - Budhni, Malehra and Pandha--and Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency.
