New Delhi, Dec 7 (UNI) The government today said it had been decided that all future projects of the new phases under the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) would be awarded on the BOT basis.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa said a major chunk of contracts under the NHDP Phase I and II had been taken up mainly through government funding. However, 17 contracts of NHDP Phase I and 27 under NHDP Phase II were awarded on the BOT basis.

He said the projects approved by the government and entrusted to the NHAI under the NHDP for upgradation are under various stages of implementation.

''Therefore, the cost of completion and escalation, if any, shall be known only after the completion of projects,'' he added.

The approved cost against each phase, i.e. Phase-I, II and IIIA, is Rs 30,300 crore (1999 prices), Rs34,339 crore (2002 prices) and Rs 22,000 crore (2004 prices) respectively, excluding escalation.

As against the approved cost, the actual expenditure, including escalation up to November this year, is Rs 31,408 crore, Rs 4550.51 crore and Rs 592.73 crore for NHDP Phase-I, II and IIIA respectively.

Replying to another query, the minister said contracts of about 82.80 per cent of the NHDP Phase-II (North-South and East-West corridors) had been awarded.
