New Delhi, Dec 7 (UNI) The accident rate in the national capital actually showed a spurt due to lack of hoardings rather than going down, Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken informed bemused Rajya Sabha members today.

Giving this information during Question Hour, he said under a study conducted by the School of Planning and Architecture it was found that "no statistical relationship" could be established between accidents and roadside advertisements. The impact on traffic was negligible at signal/manual controlled intersections, he added.

However, replying to supplementaries from CPI-M member Brinda Karat about objectionable hoardings depicting women, the Minister accepted her suggestion to invite women's groups to vet hoardings and billboards on the MCD committees which looked into the technical parameters, content and mode of display of roadside advertisements.

To another query, Mr Maken said MCD had got Rs 50 crore in revenue this year while the DTC authorities had got Rs 10 to 15 crore from displaying hoardings.

Regarding the proliferation of hoardings in Delhi despite the ban imposed by the Supreme Court, he said the Delhi Government and MCD had sought legal opinion on the matter.

The ban related to only "hazardous and attractive hoardings", the Minister clarified.
