Wockhardt launches minimally invasive knee replacement surgery

Bangalore, Dec 6 (UNI) Wockhardt Hospitals today announced a breakthrough in minimally invasive total knee replacement surgery by combining three vital parameters -- hi-flexion knee systems, minimally invasive surgery and computer-aided navigtion systems.

The hospital showcased the new concept by way of a live workshop that was broadcast via satellite to a large group of doctors in the city from its hospital.

Visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon David Carl Pollock of the US-based Salem Hospital, along with Wockhardt Consultant Surgeon Sanjay Pai, conducted two live surgeries.

Later speaking to the media here, Dr Pollock said ''the art of knee surgery has advanced significantly. The new breakthrough has helped overcome long stay in hospital, high cost, requirement of blood transfusion and inability of patients to squat.'' Dr Pai said an amalgamation of rotating platform hi-flex knee, computer navigation system for precision and the technology of minimally invasive surgery made the whole system of knee replacement an 'intelligent surgery'.

''Minimising pain in the days and weeks after surgery is the primary goal of the procedure. However, smaller incisions mean surgeons have to operate in a more compact area with a reduced field of vision,'' he added.

The surgery costs between Rs 65,000 and Rs 1,35,000 for each knee.
