Trade unions not needed in IT sector:Kiran Karnik

Kolkata, Dec 6 (UNI) NASSCOM President Kiran Karnik today ruled out the necessity of forming trade unions in the IT sector.

''In an industry where there is high attrition rate and employers take proper care of their employees there is no need of such an organisation, ''Mr Karnik stressed while speaking to the media in the INFOCOM 2006 which began here.

When asked about the proposed strike on December 14 by the CPI(M)'s labour wing CITU, he said people should be allowed to go to work and the government must facilitate proper transport arrangement on that day.

''IT employees should not be forcibly stopped and there should not be an atmosphere of fear among the workers. However, those who want to participate in the strike can do so. It is their democratic right,'' he observed.

The IT industry does not need interference or assistance from outsiders as the employees do not have any threat of losing their jobs, he said, adding the companies try to attract talent and retain them. Hence there are no grievances among the employees.

But he stressed on the fact that the sector will not allow disruption of any kind on that day.

Speaking on the issue of bandh, West Bengal IT secretary Debesh Das promised the government will provide all necessary support to ensure that work in this public utility service was not disrupted.

''The government will provide escort to the IT employees just as it did during yesterday's bandh,'' he said.
