State-level JNNURM Steering Committee approves 34 projects
New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) State-level Steering Committee on the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission today approved 34 schemes worth Rs 9,000 crore and a comprehensive City Development Plan, which will be forwarded to the Union Urban Development Ministry for its approval.
The meeting, presided by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, cleared six Municipal Corporation of Delhi projects, six of Delhi Jal Board, 20 of Public Works Department, one each of Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development-Corp, Delhi Development Authority and Slum and JJ Department.
Ms Dikshit stressed the need of ensuring uniform coverage and cost of flats to be constructed by the different agencies and have detailed discussions on Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) before signing MoUs.
The meeting was attended among others by state Urban Development Minister A K Walia, Delhi Member of Parliament Sandeep Dikshit, various MLAs, Chief Secretary R Narayanswami, New Delhi Municipal Council Chairperson, Principal Secretaries of various departments, DDA Vice Chairman, DJB CEO, Slum and JJ (MCD) Additional Commissioner.
The JNNURM, which was announced by the Centre on November 14, 2005 would facilitate massive urban renewal programmes through substantial investment of funds in city infrastructure within a period of seven years starting 2005-06, initially covering 63 cities, including Delhi, with an expenditure of Rs 1.25 crore.
The JNNURM had two submissions, one on urban infrastructure and governance, focusing on water supply, sewerage facilities, improvement of drains, transport improvement, parking facilities and creation of water bodies. The funding pattern for this was 35 per cent by the union government, 15 per cent by state governments and 50 per cent by local bodies.
The other submission was on basic services for the urban poor focusing on providing services in slums, making available houses at affordable prices to slum dwellers and other weaker sections. The funding pattern for this was 50 per cent by union government and 50 per cent by state government/local bodies.
Subjects like power, telecom, health, education and wage improvement had been excluded from funding under the JNNURM.
