Sidhu gets three-year suspended sentence, Rs 1 lakh fine

Chandigarh, Dec 6 (UNI) A day after Shibu Soren was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Shashinath Jha murder case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today handed down a three-year suspended sentence to former BJP MP and ex-cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu in a 18-year-old road rage case.

A Division Bench of Justices Mehtab Singh Gill and Baldev Singh, which had convicted Sidhu under Section 304-Part II of the IPC, also directed him to deposit a fine of Rs one lakh and to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandigarh, on Friday to furnish a bail bond of Rs one lakh to the satisfaction of the court.

Sidhu was found guilty of causing the death of one Gurnam Singh at Patiala on December 27, 1988 after an altercation when the latter attempted to overtake his vehicle.

The bench granted Sidhu time till January 31, next year to enable him to appeal to the Supreme Court against the High Court decision.
