India to attend UNGA Plenary on UN reforms on Dec 11

New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) India will attend a meeting of the G-4 in New York ahead of the debate in the plenary of the United Nations General Assembly on December 11 to discuss the UN Security Council reforms.

Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon said at a press conference here that India was continuing discussions on the UNSC reforms and there was a plan to meet in New York before December 11 to gather larger measure of support to various ideas thrown up.

''After December 11, we will be closer to the goal,'' he said in reply to a question.

The Foreign Secretary was briefing reporters on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Japan and the Philippines from December 11-16.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in Parliament that India continued to actively pursue this issue, including through coordination and engagement with the G-4.

''India is next participating in a debate in the plenary of the United Nations General Assembly on December 11...the objective is to keep focus on the UN on this vital issue whiledeveloping a model of UNSC reform that has wide support and acceptance. So far progress in this direction has been satisfactory,'' he said.
