India donates $ 250,000 for victims in Philippines
New Delhi, Dec 6: Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to the Philippines from December 11-13, India today announced a donation of 250,000 US dollars for relief and rehabilitation work in Eastern Philippines which was struck by a devastating typhoon last weekend.
The Eastern part of the Philippines was struck by typhoon Durian last weekend. The typhoon resulted in large-scale devastation to life and property.
An estimated 1000 people died or are missing in the flooding and landslides during the typhoon.
''As a token of our support to those who have suffered tragic loss of life and property, the Government of India has decided to donae a sum of 250,000 US dollars for relief and rehabilitation work in the devastated areas in the eastern Philippines,'' an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said.
