Guwahati, Dec 6 (UNI) Gauhati High Court today set aside selection of Assam police constables in 11 districts and upheld the selection of four districts of the state.

The ruling cancelled the appointments of 2814 candidates in the eleven districts of Marigaon, Barpeta, Darrang, Goalpara, Cachar, 4th Assam Police Batalion, Nagaon, Dhubri, Sonitpur, Jorhat, and Sivasagar.

However the court verdict upheld selection and appointment of 519 police constables in Karimganj and Hailakandi districts, Commando battalion and Kamrup District Executive Force, and in 10th Assam Police Battalion.

In an earlier judgement by a single bench of the court on December 12 last year had cancelled appointments of police constables in all 15 districts.

The then Congress government here had advertised for 5500 vacancies of Asam police constables on August 21, 2004 and recruitment rallies in different districts were held during 3 to 11 December, 2004. The list of selected candidates were published on January 31, 2005 that led to loud protests all over the state by deprived aspirants who alleged largescale anomalies in the selection procedure.

The protestors called for Asom bandh on February 5 this year.

Total 220 writ petitions were filed in the court against the procedure followed in selecting police constables. The court on February 6 last stayed all appointment through an interim order and called for entire records related to selection procedure from the state government. Total 105 trunks loads of documents related to selection procedure laden in two trucks were submitted before the court for its perusal.
