HC cancels constable appointments in 11 Asom districts
Guwahati, Dec 6 (UNI) The Guwahati High Court today set aside appointments of Assam police constables in 11 districts and upheld the selection in four districts of the state.
The ruling cancelled the appointments of 2814 candidates in the eleven districts of Marigaon, Barpeta, Darrang, Goalpara, Cachar, 4th Assam Police Batalion, Nagaon, Dhubri, Sonitpur, Jorhat, and Sivasagar.
However, the court verdict upheld selection of 519 police constables in Karimganj and Hailakandi districts, Commando battalion and Kamrup District Executive Force and in 10th Asom Police Battalion.
The earlier judgment by a single bench of the court on December, 12 last year had cancelled appointments of police constables in all 15 districts.
The then Congress government here had advertised for 5500 vacancies of Asam police constables on August 21, 2004 and recruitment rallies in different districts were held from December 3 - 11 in the same year. However, the list of selected candidates published on January 31 last year, led to protests all over the state by deprived aspirants who alleged largescale anomalies in the selection procedure.
The protestors called for Asom bandh on February 5 this year.
a total of 220 writ petitions were filed in the court against the procedure followed in selecting police constables.
The court on February 6 last stayed all appointments through an interim order and called for entire records related to selection procedure from the state government. Total 105 trunks loads of documents, related to selection procedure laden in two trucks, were submitted before the court for its perusal.
