Govt thinking of shifting airport expansion site
Chennai, Dec 6 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi told the Assembly today that the Government was thinking about shifting the airport expansion project to an alternative site.
Raising the issue in the House, V Sivapunniyam (CPI) said residents of Kowl Bazaar, Pammal and Anakaputhur in the suburbs apprehended that houses would be taken over for the expansion project.
Referring to protests by locals, he urged the State Government to select land away from residential settlements.
The Chief Minister said efforts had already begun to locate alternative lands away from residential settlements.
He said some middlemen, for their personal gain, had spread rumours that their residences would be taken over for the project.
Stating there was not an iota of truth in this, Mr Karunanidhi urged people to be vigilant and not believe such rumours.
