Government orders monitoring of overseas recruiting agents

Guwahati, Dec 6 (UNI) The Asom government has directed the police to take strict action against all unregistered recruiting agents, involved in overseas recruitment business without having valid registration certificate under the Emigration Act, 1983, official sources informed here today.

The state government's warning came following information from the Protector General of Emigrants, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, that a number of complaints had been received by the ministry against unregistered recruiting agents.

The state government has promptly directed the police to take strict action against all such unregistered agents who have been involved in business of overseas recruitment without valid registration.

As per section 10 of the Emigration Act, 1983, no recruiting agent shall commence or carry on the business of recruitment, except under and in accordance with a certificate issued on that behalf by the Protector General of Emigrants, who is the Registering Authority.

Violation of the said provision of the Act is an offence under section 24(i)(b) of the Act and is punishable with imprisonment of a two years term and with fine up to Rs 2,000.

The state government has further directed the police to take necessary action in this matter as per the provisions in the Act and submit monthly status report, the sources said.
