General strike affects life in Manipur

Imphal, Dec 06: A 36-hour statewide general strike called byJiribam District Demand Committee to demand upgradation of JiribamSub-Division of Imphal East to a full-fledged revenue district affectedlife here today.

The strike began at 1800 hrs last evening.

Movement of vehicles were affected and interstate bus serviceswere also affected due to the strike. The Delimitation Commission hadapproved the upgradation of Jiribam into a full-fledged revenuedistrict and the state Cabinet had agreed in principle to upgrade thesub division.

The Chief Minister had stated that it was just a matter of time.

Police said there were reports of arson and violence at Jiribam.

Strike supporters burnt the effigies of Chief Minister O.IbobiSingh and Th Devendra, Minister Food and Civil Supplies who is thelocal MLA.

Security was tightened in view of the strike which will end tomorrow at 0600 hours.
