DIAL unveils master plan for Delhi airport
New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) today unveiled a master plan to modernise the Indira Gandhi International Airport at a cost of 1.5 billion dollars (about Rs 6,680 crore).
''It won't be just an airport, it'll be an experience,'' said DIAL's Managing Director Srinivas Bommidala. ''An airport that India will be proud of.'' The master plan was designed in consultation with Mott McDonald, a leading management, engineering and development consultancy, and HOK, world-renowned airport architects based in Britain.
It envisages construction of a new integrated passenger terminal (Terminal 3) to cater to both domestic and international traffic. It will be ready before Commonwealth Games in 2010.
In the first phase, the airport will be capable of handling 37 million passengers per year. Ultimately, it will have a capacity of 100 million passengers per year.
Terminal 3 will feature 55 contact stands (aerobridges) and 30 remote parking bays for passenger embarkation and disembarkation. It is targeted that 90 per cent of all passenger traffic here will be handled via aerobridges by 2010. Six of these aerobridges will be compatible for Airbus A380.
Terminal 3 will be a modern complex featuring common use terminal equipment (CUTE) and an advanced in-line baggage handling system with CTX machines for greater efficiency and security. The check-in area will feature over 130 counters.
