CM holds review meeting with civil, police officials

Hyderabad, Dec 6 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today held a review meeting with top civil and police officials on atrocities on SCs and STs (prevention of atrocities) Act.

An official release said the meeting was held in connection with the tenth meeting of the Inter-State Council, which would be held under Chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December nine.

The release said Andhra Pradesh had 123.39 lakh SC population and 50.24 lakh ST population and about 16,460 atrocity cases were booked against SCs and STs from 2000 to 2006.

It said Special sessions courts were now functioning in 12 districts apart from 22 mobile courts covering all districts to exclusively deal with these cases.

The state government was providing Rs two lakh and employment to the dependents, education to the children in case of murder and unnatural death.

It had also launched massive awareness programmes to prevent atrocities in a big way throughout the state.

District vigilance and monitoring committees were constituted in all 23 districts, the release added.
