CM announces compensation for Omalur school

Chennai, Dec 6 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today assured the Assembly that adequate compensation would be provided to the Omalur school which was ransacked by the public recently following the suspicious death of a girl student.

Replying to an adjournment motion raised by Congress whip Peter Alphonse, the Chief Minister said there was suspicion in the death of Sukanya, the student, for it was not known whether it was a case of suicide or murder.

The police, in their report, had stated that the girl had committed suicide as she was unable to bear the scolding of teachers for scoring low marks in Chemistry.

Following rumours that the girl was raped and thrown into a well, about 10,000 people gathered from nearby villages and resorted to violence.

He said the post-mortem report made it clear that the girl was not raped.

However, the police acted fast to make sure that the incident didn't lead to large-scale violence.

The Bishop of Salem Catholic Diocese appreciated Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam for taking swift action by opening the school on December one, he said.

Mr Karunanidhi assured the House that the Government would pay compensation as demanded by the Minorities Commission which visited the incident spot.

Earlier, Mr Alphonse demanded a judicial probe into the incident and compensation be paid for the loss incurred by the school management.

PMK Legislative Party Leader G K Mani denied the charge of State Minorities Commission against its party MLA A Tamilarasu for instigating violence.
