Chandigarh boys, Haryana girls win hockey titles

Chandigarh, Dec 6 (UNI) Punjab boys and Haryana girls won the Under-17 hockey titles in the 52nd National School Games here today.

Chandigarh boys and girls also clinched the Under-14, U-17 and U-19 softball titles.

Chandigarh Hockey Academy, run by the Chandigarh Administration, prevailed over Punjab by 2-0 in the hockey final. Both goals came in the first half. Deepinder converted a penalty corner in the fourth minute to put Chandigarh ahead and one minute before the half time, Deepak pumped in a field goal. The second half remained unproductive.

Earlier, Haryana finished third at the expense of Uttar Pradesh whom they beat by 2-1. It was UP which drew the first blood through Lalit Upadhaya who scored a field goal in the 25th minute. Haryana hit back with vengeance and neutralised the lead in the 43rd minute through Arjun who converted a penalty corner. Munish Rana snatched the match-winner for Haryana with a field gold in the 62nd minute.

In a rough and touch hardline match, Haryana's Rohtash and Munish Rana were shown yellow cards for deliberate rough tackle. Amit, also of Haryana was shown green card.

Advisor to the A Chandigarh Administrator Lalit Sharma distributed the prizes. Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, DPI (Schools) Ashwani Kumar, Joint Director Sports JPS Sidhu and Assistant Director Sports (Education), KS Bharti were also present.
