Chennai, Dec 6 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Assembly today passed a Bill to abolish Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to professional degree courses.

Moving the 'Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Educational Institutions Bill 2006,' Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy said admissions would be made after 'normalisation of marks' to ensure equality of opportunities for students from different educational boards.

He said marks obtained by students in relevant subjects in the qualifying examination conducted by various Boards or Authority would be equated with marks obtained by students in the same subjects in the qualifying examination conducted by the State Board, by adopting the method of normalisation.

After normalisation of marks, qualified students of different Boards would be merged into a common merit list, he said.

The Minister said the normalisation process was being followed by Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani and even the Supreme Court had made an appreciative remark about the method in one of its recent judgments.

He expressed hope that the proposed Act would not run into legal problems as the Supreme Court itself had accepted the normalisation process.
