AI gets first of 68 new planes, plans more routes

New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) Government-owned Air India (AI) today celebrated the delivery of a brand new Boeing aircraft, the first of 18 next generation 737-800s for its low cost arm AI Express.

The event marked the arrival of the first airplane following the order for 68 Boeing jetliners, the largest commercial airplane order in India's civil aviation history.

''It is a proud moment for us,'' said AI's Chairman and managing Director Vasudevan Thulasidas. ''The significant landmark coincides with 75 year celebrations of AI's glorious service.'' The airline is inducting new planes after a decade to shore up its depleting fleet.

''We're now ready to face competition from foreign airlines. Our product will be among the best in the world,'' said Mr Thulasidas.

AI had placed the order for new planes worth 11 billion dollars in December 2005. It comprises of 27 787-8 Dreamliners, eight 777-200LRs (longer range) Worldliners and 15 777-300ERs (extended range), and 18 next generation 737-800s for low cost AI Express.

The 737-800, which can seat 162 to 189 passengers, can fly 260 nautical miles farther, consume less fuel and carry 12 more passengers than the competition. The delivery of second 737-800 NG to AI is expected in third week of December followed by three more planes in January 07.
