Police ban entry of Karat, four dalit leaders into Nagpur
Nagpur, Dec 3 (UNI) The police today banned the entry of four dalit leaders and CPM Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat into Nagpur city as a precautionary measure after denying permission for a morcha proposed to be taken out tomorrow against the recent killing of four members of a dalit family in Khairlanji in Bhandara district in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
The Winter Session of the Maharashtra legislature begins here tomorrow.
Besides Ms Karat, the police have banned the entry to Prakash Ambedkar, Jogendra Kawade, Ramdas Athavale and Sulekha Kumbhare into Nagpur under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), a police spokesman said here tonight.
The police have detained Milind Mane, who was among those leading the protests against the killing of four members of a dalit family in Khairlanji in Bhandara district of Vidarbha, under the provisions of the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act, the spokesman said.
Dalit organisations had sought permission for the morcha to protest the killing of Surekha Bhotmange 45, daughter Priyanka 18, and sons Roshan 23 and Sudhir 21 in Khairlanji late on the night of September 30 over a land dispute.
