BAGHDAD, Dec 1 (Reuters) A car bomb blasted Baghdad's celebrated pet market today, killing three people and wounding 22 others, police sources said.

The central Ghazil market, a popular spectacle on weekend Fridays, specialises in selling pet animals, ranging from guard dogs to monkeys and snakes.

It is well known for trading in birds such as pigeons and parrots as well as tropical fish. It also sells bird seed and pet food.

Markets in the capital have been a regular target over the past three years. Many of the more than 200 people killed on November. 23 in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City were at a market there. It was the deadliest attack since the US invasion.

Ghazil is close the main central Shorja market, where traders say they have been staying closed or limiting their hours this week and are demanding the government do more to defend them against attacks.
