Thakur calls for more research on prevention of kidney disease

Bhubaneswar, Nov 30 (UNI) Orissa Governor Rameswar Thakur today urged the doctors to conduct more research on prevention of kidney disease which has emerged as challenging task to the nephrologists.

Inaugurating the 37th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Nephrology here, Mr Thakur said increasing incidence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension had resulted in increase in the cases of chronic kidney diseases in the country.

The Governor called for an improvement in the management of kidney diseases which should be affordable to all as kidney transplant and chronic maintenance dialysis were not affordable to a majority section of the society.

Mr Thakur said there is a need for both research in preventive aspect on kidney disease as well as awareness among the mass about the life taking threats of kidney disease.

He emphasised both the early detection and treatment of hypertension and diabetes as well as the popularisation of habits favouring healthy kidney and called upon the doctors to undertake more research utilising the latest technology.

The Governor felicitated Dr K K Malhotra for his outstanding contribution and involvement in the study of Nephrology.

Newly elected president of the Indian Society of Nephrology Dr Anuradha urged the indigenous drug manufacturers to bring down the cost of the consumable drugs to facilitate more patients to have access to the Renal Replacement Therapy.

She also appealed to the government to provide tax exemption to all life saving drugs and equipments to treat the increasing number of chronic kidney diseases.

Outgoing ISN Presdient Dr S C Das underscored the need for more research on kidney diseases and asked the doctors to spare one day in a week to treat the poor patients free of cost.
