Parliamentary Committee calls for improvement in sports standard
New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) A parliamentary committee on 'Promomtion of Sports' has expressed dismay at the continuous deterioration of sports standard in the country and has called for a concerted action by concerned agencies to make India a sports superpower.
The department-related Committee on Human Resource Development in its 185th report, which was tabled at both houses of the Parliament yesterday, said in spite of the considerable investment, there has been a downward slide in sports standard in the country.
The Committe noted a complete absence of sports culture in the country and has called for a national campaign to rectify this.
It has also underlined the need for modern training, raising dietray allowance for sportspersons, rationalising the import duty on sports goods and equipments, provision of social security, better carrer avenues to those taking to sports and foreign training for domestic coaches.
Advocating a policy of 'catch them young', the committee has emphasized on making efforts for spotting and nuturing talents in rural areas.
