Delhi Govt to undertake steps to ease traffic at ITO during CW Games
New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) As part of efforts to ease traffic flow before the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Delhi Government is considering a proposal for construction of a 6 lane flyover and an underground corridor at the most congested B S Z Marg crossing.
Talking to reporters, Delhi Urban Development and PWD Minister A K Walia said the proposal, under active consideration by the PWD, was aimed at helping in providing smooth flow of traffic and make two intersections at B.S.Z.Marg-I.P. Marg and ITO signal-free before commencement of ensuing Commonwealth Games apart from reduction in commuting time, consumption of fuel and pollution level.
Dr Walia said a 620-meter-long six-lane flyover along BSZ Marg would facilitate straight traffic from Tilak Marg to Delhi Gate and vice versa. Right turn from Tilak Marg to IP Marg will be allowed only at surface level-signal free.
Straight traffic along DDU Marg-IP Marg-Vikas Marg would pass through an underground corridor of 6 lane width. This corridor will cross BSZ Marg and Ring Road as a continuous underground corridor and will ramp up towards IP Barrage after crossing Ring Road. There will be ramps connecting the underground corridor to IP Marg near Vikas Bhawan. A right turning loop will also be constructed to allow the traffic from Vikas Marg to Ring Road to avoid the signal at ITO.
Dr Walia added that BSZ Marg-IP Marg intersection at A point would become signal free. The ITO intersection will also become signal-free as right turns from Ring Road-IP Depot side to Vikas Marg side will take U turn near Velodrome Road with a different facility and turn left at IP Flyover to reach Vikas Marg.
Dr Walia said the entire area would have a conflict free pedestrian corridor. The bus stop near SPA will be shifted under the IP Flyover and connected with continuous pedestrian way. The plan would also integrate requirements of HCBS. Dr Walia would visit this area on Tuesday to personally assess the feasibility of this mega project, which would change the entire scenario of traffic management at ITO crossing.
